The left ventricular sump vent catheter is a sterile, disposable PVC catheter. This is used in open-heart surgery. Surgeons use it in order to prevent overdistention and tissue damage resulting from distress in the left ventricle. When the bypass equipment is removed the left vent cath can measure pressure in the ventricle. Four drainage eyes built into the cath provide good drainage without distressing the heart. Depending on the size of the gauge the vent can offer specialized help in many ways. A larger lumen allows for easy drainage. A smaller lumen provides better access to pressure monitoring options. When using these, you pass the left ventricular vents through the pulmonary vein. You also have the option of passing directly through the ventricle through the apex of the heart.
